Our History

Shiloh Christian Ministries was incorporated on July 1, 1978 in Sierra Vista, Arizona. The ministry, however, had its actual origin in the heart of U.S. Army Chaplain Joseph L. Tumpkin, while stationed at Ft Hood Texas in the early 70’s.  Shortly thereafter, while stationed in Mannheim, Germany, Chaplain Tumpkin felt a strong conviction that the ministry of Shiloh would be established in southeast Arizona.  Through an assignment by the U.S. Army in 1977, Chaplain Tumpkin and his family relocated to Ft Huachuca, a U.S. Army installation, adjacent to the city of Sierra Vista.  Chaplain Tumpkin became the pastor of Kino Chapel on Ft Huachuca, where he served for four years.

The first tangible phase of the ministry of Shiloh was the establishment of Shiloh Christian Day School in rented facilities in September 1979.  Following the establishment of the school, a small Christian Bookstore was opened in 1980.  Both the Shiloh Christian School and Bookstore were the first of their kind in the community of Sierra Vista.  The ministry of the School and the Bookstore served Sierra Vista for many years.

The birthing of Shiloh Christian Center came about when Chaplain Tumpkin was faced with a military change of assignment out of Arizona.  Rather than move to another location to pursue a military career, Chaplain Tumpkin left his active duty Army role, became a member of the US Army Reserves and established Shiloh Christian Center in April 1981.

Following many starts and stops to the rental of a facility large enough to house Shiloh Christian School and Shiloh Christian Center, the Property at 200 North Avenue became available.  Based on the commitment of a small group of families both military and civilian, a strong base of financial support was pledged for the establishment of this new ministry.  Founded as an independent interdenominational, charismatic ministry, the first service as Shiloh Christian Center was held on Sunday April 26, 1981 and Shiloh Christian School also moved into its permanent home where it continued to provide quality Christian Education for 30 years.

Through the continued faithfulness of the congregation, we acquired and paid for 22 acres of property, on Avenida del Sol which now is the location of our new worship facility, at 1519 Avenida del Sol.

Since its beginnings, Shiloh Christian Ministries has been a stable, meaningful influence in Sierra Vista.  Because of the stability and integrity of our pastoral and administrative staff and congregation, Shiloh is frequently called upon to provide support to other ministries and organizations.  The ministry and focus of Shiloh has grown and continues as a house of prayer and worship, a refuge in the end times, an outreach and help to the needy, a counseling ministry and a place of gathering.  All of these truths were foundational in our ministry and remain essential to our purpose and vision.

Shiloh is a relevant, thriving, multicultural, multi-generational church with strong Godly leadership, staff and congregation.  Our history is still being written and we look to our future with hope that God will enable us to continue the journey that began some thirty years ago.
